トランプ大統領に対する、日本人記者の質問動画
ある本を読んでいたら、トランプ大統領（当時）が、記者会見で日本の記者がした質問が聞き取れず、I don’t understand you.と言ったことがあると知りました。
そこで、私は、その時の動画が残っていないか調べましたが、ありました。
2018年11月の記者会見での出来事だったようです。
下記のようなやり取りだったようです。（私が聞き取れなかった部分には???を付けています）
Reporter: Mr.President, can you just??? how you focus on the economic …
Trump: Where are you from, please?
Reporter: Japan.
Trump: Say hello to Shinzo.
Reporter: Yes.
Trump: I’m sure he is happy about tariffs on his cars. Go ahead.
Reporter: That’s my question, actually. So, how you focus on the trade issue(???) with Japan? Will you ask Japan to do more, or will you change your tone?
Trump: I really don’t understand you.
Reporter: How will you focus on trade and economic…
Trump: Trade with Japan?
Reporter: Yes.
Trump: We are dealing with Japan right now on trade. Japan has.. it’s a great country. You have a great prime minister, who just had a great successful election. He is a very good friend of mine. He is one of the people I’m closest with. And…but I tell him all the time that Japan does not treat the Unites States fairly in trade. They send in millions of cars at a very low tax. They don’t take our cars, and if they do that, they have a massive tax on the cars.
トランプはなぜ質問を聞き取れなかったのか？（発音面）
日本人の記者の質問は、How (will) you focus on the trade issue??? with Japan? Will you ask Japan to do more, or will you change your tone?の部分です。
まず発音面では、focusのfの発音がわかりにくかったのだと思います。下唇を上の歯に当てず、日本語風に「ホーカス」”hocus”のような発音になってしまっています。この”f”がしっかり発音できていれば、かなりわかりやすかったのではないかと思います。
それともう一つ、trade issue???というところがよく聞き取れません。
おそらくtrade issue と言っているのでしょうが、なにか発音がグチャグチャッとしていて、はっきりしません。
ここもはっきり口を開けて、明確にしゃべれば、トランプも聞き取れたのではないかと思います。
トランプはなぜ質問を聞き取れなかったのか？（文法面）
文法面では、一番最初に質問し始めたところで、Mr.President, can you just??? how you focus on the economic …と言っていますが、how you focus … の前に動詞がないようです。
本来なら、can you just explain how you focus…のように、何らかの動詞が入るはずですが、それが聞こえなかったので、トランプはいきなり理解できなかったのかもしれません。
そして、改めて質問し直す部分で、So, how you focus on the trade issue(???) with Japan? と聞いていますが、本来なら、how will you focus とか how would you focusというように、助動詞が入るはずですが、それもはいっていません。
このような文法的なミスも、質問の意味が伝わらなかった理由かもしれません。
なお、最終的にトランプは、記者が聞き直されて言い直した質問にtradeという単語が入っていたのが聞き取れたようで、日本との貿易問題について、答えてくれています。
